THE PHANTOM OF THE WEST 1931 |
No matter how bleak things looked for the hero or
heroine at the end of this week's serial chapter, they
always found a way to survive their peril to return
next week to continue their battle for justice against
the serial's notorious villain, be it the Scorpion, the Claw, the Tarantula or the Wrecker.
There was no time for in-depth character development or, heaven forbid, any romance between the hero and his leading lady. Just good old-fashioned chases, shoot-outs and fisticuffs.
And even the week when one serial wrapped, taking no chances to lose your coming back the next Saturday, many theatres often started their next serial the same week the other one ended.
The ticket buyers didn't have a chance, and they didn't care.
